Maria Sacchetti covers immigration for The Washington Post. She received the 2015 French-American Foundation's Immigration Journalism Award for her article about immigrants missing along the southern US border. In Massachusetts, her work has led to the release of several immigrants from detention and the halting of deportation proceedings against others. She also investigated the secret release of criminal immigrants without warning victims or registering sex offenders. Overseas, she covered the refugee crisis in Europe in 2015, the Haiti earthquake in 2010 and traveled to Brazil, Guatemala, Colombia, and Ecuador on assignment. She has a bachelor's in journalism and a master's degree in Latin American studies/ economics, with a focus on immigration. She is fluent in Spanish.
