Sergio Bustos is a Senior Editor for POLITICO Florida.

He was a reporter for more than 20 years, working eight years at The Philadelphia Inquirer, where he was Pulitzer Prize finalist, and as a Washington correspondent for six years during the George W. Bush administration. He was an editor for 10 years, including five as The Miami Herald’s state/politics editor. He shared in the McClatchy President's award for a story exposing campaign fraud in a congressional primary race.

At the Herald, he oversaw staff in Tallahassee, Washington and Miami, was part of an award-winning partnership with The Tampa Bay Times in covering the statehouse in Tallahassee, and as an editor with PolitiFact.

He spent 2015-16 as part of a team of reporters at The Associated Press covering the 2016 presidential campaign. He helped cover Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio until they suspended their campaigns in 2015.

He joined POLITICO as a senior editor in charge of POLITICO Florida in July 2016.

Born in Chile and raised in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., Sergio attended public schools in northern Virginia and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University. He also was one of 10 journalists awarded a yearlong fellowship at the University of Southern California

Sergio has been married for nearly 23 years and is the proud father of two daughters, ages 12 and 19. They live in South Florida.
